Is it necessary to have a mattress protector – Do you really need one?

We understand the struggle of choosing a mattress that suits you best. However, once the decision has been made – you can sit back and relax for years to come. Now the question is, what can you do to keep your mattress good as new for a really long time? The journey towards mattress care begins by investing in a high-quality mattress protector!

What is a mattress protector?

A mattress protector lies between your bed sheet and your mattress. It is meant to fit your mattress the same way a fitted sheet would – seamlessly, covering the top of your mattress.

What does a mattress protector do?

A mattress protector forms a protective barrier against accidental spills, bacteria and all sorts of allergens. Not only does it shelter you from all these unwanted nasties, but also increases the longevity of your mattress - which is exactly why we believe it is one of the most important bedding accessories to have.

Provides protection against dust mites and bacteria. If you constantly wake up with a congested and runny nose, these tiny creatures are to blame. They thrive in humid climates and are known to eat dead skin cells for a living. As we shed over 10 million dead skin flakes each night, our bed is their favorite place to be. A mattress protector forms a protective barrier between your mattress and your skin - keeping all the crawlies away.

Offers easy hygiene maintenance. Dead skin cells can get caught up in our mattresses and we all know how hard it is to entirely clean a mattress. Let’s be real - who has time to call the professionals? While on the other hand, with a mattress protector, you can simply toss it in the washing machine every week. Make sure to wash your mattress protector at a warm setting to kill all the allergens - goodbye dust mites!

Increases the longevity of your mattress. If you sweat more excessively than others, it is especially crucial for you to invest in a mattress protector - as perspiration is the root cause of mould/mildew found in mattresses. Without a mattress protector, sweat and odour may sink in deep, making it next to impossible to clean - ultimately leaving you no choice but to change your mattress.

Helps the environment. If you are already sleeping on a non-environmentally friendly mattress, not protecting it with a mattress protector would just further contribute to the mattress landfill crisis – meaning you will have to replace your mattress much frequently, leaving the used mattress at the landfill.

How to select a mattress protector?

Sizing matters the most – a mattress protector should fit your mattress like a glove. Make sure to measure your mattress and select a mattress protector that is the same size. Now that you have got the sizing settled, here are the top 3 properties you should look out for when buying a mattress protector.

Hypoallergenic. Protectors that are hypoallergenic are perfect for allergy sufferers. As perspiration is ground for dust mites and mould, protectors with such properties help keep you dry and protected by wicking away moisture while you sleep.

Cooling. Again, perspiration is a no-no – especially if you are a heavy sweater! In order to avoid overheating & sweating too much at night, look for mattress protectors that are made with natural and cooling materials such as cotton, bamboo and silk. Not only do they keep you cool and comfortable at night by regulating your body temperature, they are extremely breathable!

Easy wash & care. Machine-washable mattress protectors are ideal – a simple toss in the washing machine and you’re done! Make sure they are washable at least 40°C or above – such a high temperature helps clean your mattress protector by killing dust mites, allergens and bacteria.

FAQ: HEVEYA® ORGANIC MATTRESS PROTECTOR

How often should you wash a mattress protector?

We recommend washing mattress protectors every 3-4 weeks. However, if you suffer from allergies or other skin conditions, it is best to give your mattress protector a wash every other week. Just give them a toss in the washing machine with your bed sheets!

How long do mattress protectors last - How often should you replace a mattress protector?

On average, the lifespan of a mattress protector is about 2-3 years - this is mostly due to the build up of dead skin cells, body perspiration and frequent spills that happen over time. As Heveya® Organic Mattress Protector is naturally antimicrobial, it is meant to last you a good 5-7 years.

Do mattress protectors make the bed sweaty and hot?

Water-resistant mattress protectors made with synthetic materials cause poor circulation and trap hot air which then makes you feel super hot and sweaty at night. It is recommended to look for mattress protectors made of natural materials like bamboo and cotton - which is exactly what the Heveya® Organic Mattress Protector is made of. Bamboo works perfectly in regulating your body temperature keeping you cool and comfortable all night long!

Is your mattress protector suitable for sensitive skin?

A Heveya® Organic Mattress Protector is perfect for those with sensitive skin and allergies. It is made using only natural organic cotton and bamboo lyocell fibre that offer great antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties.

Do you put a sheet over a mattress protector?

It is understandable that you question putting bed sheets on top as mattress protectors claim to offer the protection you need. However, it is best to always put bed sheets over your mattress protector for added comfort and luxury. What matters the most here is the type of bed sheets you opt for - especially if you have sensitive skin. If you have invested in a hypoallergenic mattress protector, it is best you buy bed sheets that are also hypoallergenic - Check our Heveya® Bamboo Fitted Sheets!

Will the feel of the mattress change after placing a mattress protector on top?

Mattress protectors do not change the feel of your mattress. As they are generally thin, they have very little impact on your level of comfort. Besides, no one would even know there is a mattress protector underneath when you top it with breathable and soft bed sheets - It’s that seamless!

Why would I need a mattress protector since my Heveya® mattress already comes with a removable mattress cover?

Simply put, short-term and long-term protection. Our removable mattress covers offer protection in the long run by keeping your mattress mold and dust mite free, while our mattress protectors are super convenient for protection against accidental spills. You can only dry clean our covers, but you can surely toss our mattress protectors in a washing machine anytime!

What is the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress protector?

A mattress protector is designed to protect your mattress from accidental spills, dead skin cells and all sorts of allergens whilst a mattress topper is simply an extension of your mattress. It provides added comfort and that plush, luxurious feeling you can’t seem to get enough of at hotels. If you own both a mattress topper and a mattress protector - rule of thumb is to add the mattress protector on top of the mattress topper so it stays protected just as a mattress would!
